Impulses for the oceans of the future - this was the guiding theme of the Parliamentary Evening of the German Marine Research Alliance (DAM) on 21 October 2024, which offered around 100 guests from politics, science, business and organised civil society insights into the DAM research mission mareXtreme, among other things.
Co-speaker Pr. Dr Achim Kopf (MARUM, University of Bremen) began by presenting the mission with its cross-cutting topics and joint projects. Dr Katja Metfies (Alfred Wegener Institute), coordinator of the PrimePrevention joint project, then emphasised the urgent need for action with regard to the biological risks posed by toxic algae and bacteria on German coasts.
The panel discussion with experts from science, politics, business and nature conservation emphasised the important role of inter- and transdisciplinary cooperation in the development of innovative and sustainable solutions for marine protection.
