Kiel Lighthouse logs record 55-day marine heatwave during unusually warm spring
2025.

In spring 2025, the North Sea and Baltic Sea recorded exceptionally high sea surface
temperatures, according to Germany’s Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency
(BSH). The North Sea reached an average of 8.7 °C, the highest spring value since
records began in 1997—0.9 °C above the long-term average. The Baltic Sea also
experienced significant warming, particularly in its southwestern region, where
temperatures were more than 2 °C above normal.
A marine heatwave lasting 55 days was observed at the Kiel Lighthouse from 28 March to 21 May, marking the longest such event ever recorded at that station. During this period, water temperatures averaged 2.6 °C above the 1991–2020 mean, with peaks reaching 4.3 °C above average.
