ElbeXtreme sends greetings from the first stakeholder workshop

The first full-day stakeholder workshop took place on 12.02.2025 at the BSH in Hamburg to identify and prioritize key risks to sectors and society in the Elbe estuary study area due to climate extremes (storm surge, fluvial floods, low flows/droughts, aquatic heatwaves). The objective was to develop a shared comprehensive understanding of risk with the local and regional stakeholders.

The event started with Prof. Dr. Eric Achterberg, the coordinator, introducing the project ElbeXtreme. Then, the mareXtreme mission spokesperson, Prof. Dr. Torsten Schlurmann, introduced the mareXtreme mission and the DAM.

The participants then worked in smaller groups on the following four topics

  1. Visions for a resilient Elbe estuary

  2. Unpacking risks to sectors and society due to coastal extremes in the Elbe estuary

  3. Identification of current and past responses to address the identified risks

  4. Discussing ecosystem impacts and interlinkages within the risk network

The workshop concluded with a plenary session, during which participants shared highlights from the different sessions and gave general feedback.

The workshop not only brought together actors from various sectors but also provided valuable insights, and we hope that this will be the start of continued exchange and collaboration.

The United Nations University will work on summarizing and reflecting on the results of this workshop to incorporate stakeholder perspectives into the project activities going forward. We will also share a summary of the results of this workshop with the participants.

We thank all the participants for their time and for sharing their perspectives.

Best wishes and see you soon
