Thomas Langmaack received an award in the category „Impact“ in the ideas competition organized by starting business, the founding service of Leibniz University Hanover. This category recognizes ideas that are particularly distinguished by their sustainability in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The award-winning idea is drone-assisted monitoring for the detection and characterization of floating and solid bodies. It was created in the Wremen real laboratory, which is part of the METAscales project within the current DAM research mission mareXtreme, in collaboration with the local dike association. The aim is to quantify drifts quickly and reliably in the future and thus support local practice with reliable data.

Why is this relevant? Storm surges wash large amounts of debris onto the dikes, mainly dead plant material from the foreland, but also garbage. If left lying down, it damages the turf that protects the dike. It must therefore be cleared quickly after storm surges. Drone-assisted monitoring provides data on quantity, location and composition. This makes it easier to plan clearance and supports coastal protection.

The award demonstrates how science and practice work together in the real laboratory to develop application-oriented solutions for dealing with marine natural hazards.
