Advancing Extreme Marine Hazards Research: MULTI-MAREX Annual Meeting 2025 Convenes in Aachen

From 20 to 22 May 2025, the annual MULTI-MAREX (3. DAM Mission mareXtreme) project meeting took place at the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management (IWW) at RWTH Aachen University. This gathering brought together project partners and stakeholders to discuss progress and collaborative efforts in understanding extreme marine events and natural hazards in the Central Mediterranean.
Professor Klaus Reicherter and Professor Holger Schüttrumpf welcomed the guests and participants. After the welcome, a tour of the IWW hydraulics laboratory was conducted, offering insights into current experiments and simulations for various coastal and aquatic regions, with opportunities for direct interaction with the responsible researchers.
Key sessions during the meeting included:
General Updates: Presentations on the current status of MULTI-MAREX work packages, outlining project roadmaps and recent developments.
Scientific Presentations: A keynote presentation on Santorini Activity by Prof. Paraskevi Nomikou from the University of Athens, alongside discussions on expedition planning and cruise ideas for future phases of the project.
Presentations by the Kalamata Municipality and Representatives: The Municipality of Kalamata presented Prof. Klaus Reicherter with a memorandum of understanding signed by Mayor Athanasios Vasilopoulos. We also learnt about the region's current and future tsunami readiness projects and discussed areas where we can cooperate and carry out knowledge exchange.
Stakeholder Engagement: Ideas and future plans for implementation of the Living Laboratory concept in Kalamata and Santorini within the project framework.
The meeting emphasised co-design, collaboration and knowledge exchange, offering ample opportunities for networking and discussions on cross-linkages and synergies between different working groups.
